Ashes of Love is a 2018 Chinese drama base on the novel Heavy Sweetness, Ash like Frost by Dian Xian. An extremely popular series, it amass about 15 billion views during its run and up to now. My bad 15 billion +1 since I am now an official VIEWER of the series. It stars Yang Zi (one of the new Four Dan actress) and Deng Lun. Now some of you might have read the novel, so correct me if I am wrong when I am giving a short introduction to this drama.
Just like what the title says, this series is one of many about LOVE (FAKE!). You got a deity love triangle between the Fire God Xu Feng (acted by Deng Lun) who loves this girl named Jin Mi (acted by Yang Zi) but she is promised at a young age to be wedded to Xu Feng’s brother named Run Yu who is God of Night (acted by Luo Yunxi) after the heavenly emperor unknowingly tells Luo Lin (Jin Mi’s father the water deity acted by Wang Ren Jun) that if his firstborn was to be a boy, he would become sworn brothers with Run Yu but if it was a girl…..she would become Run Yu’s wife (kinda like Jin Yong’s novel Legend of the condor heroes). To make matters complicated we also have Sui He, who is like the niece of Queen Mother of the West (Heavenly Empress as this series call her. Acted by Kathy Chow) and in love with Xu Feng. Oh as a important note, the Jade Emperor (call Heavenly Emperor acted by He Zhonghua) and the Queen Mother of the West are like Zeus and Hera in this series. The Jade Emperor foster an illegitimate son (the eldest prince of the heavenly realm) Run Yu with Suli (a fish princess acted by Fan Mianlin) because she looked like Zi Fen (Flower Goddess who is Jin Mi’s mother acted by Zhang Yan Yan). Zi Fen loved and was loved by Luo Lin) but under the order of the emperor he was force to ditch Zi Fen and married Lin Xiu (who is a wind deity acted by Wang Yuan Ke). Zi Fen understandably turned very spicy because she hated how Luo Lin didn’t disobey the emperor and marry her instead, so she decided to give her daughter, Jin Mi, a pill that is supposedly fused with the heart so that the person can never love anyone so that her daughter Jin Mi can never feel the feeling of being betrayed which I guess is valid, ALMOST making me ahem not blame her for kind of ruining her daughter’s life! It’s like your mom got ditch by your dad and now she forces you to never fall in love, I mean it’s one thing that you hate men and will never date or fall in love but it’s another to be force by your mom without your knowledge that you can never fall in love. I guess Jin Mi’s mom was also trying to get her past the mortal love trial that she foresaw in her daughter life, but then again in Chinese traditional mythology you can never ever escape fate except in SUPER RARE cases and I thought she being a GODDESS would know how this would work. Also nobody actually know of Jin Mi’s birth, the flower goddess uh kind of made her flowerers (HA) I mean followers shut the eff up about it or be destroy! Oh yeah and the Queen Mother of the West, yeah she loves HER SON Xu Feng which I guess is a plus, but hates Run Yu to the core (which is understandable….) so much so that she took it on herself to kill Suli’s (Run Yu’s mom) relatives. We also have a secondary couple in this thing, uh Liu Ying (acted by Chen Yu Qi) and Qi Yuan (acted by Zou Ting Wei) who is working for the heavenly empress after she made him take poison and yeah if he doesn’t work for her he dead mate. This is all pretty funny if you view it through the lenses of their “true form”. Jin Mi is supposedly a grape fairy (basically she is a grape….) who wants to eff with a Xu Feng the Phoenix, while being betrothed to Run Yu the dragon. If any of you is confuse let me give you a quick diagram
Basically this series focus on Jin Mi’s love trial with a subplot of Run Yu plotting for the throne against his brother Xu Feng (he didn’t care for the throne before hand…) after finding out that his step mother kill a lot of his birth mother family members… I guess it does have a good premise…..so I hope the series delivers and it is not just ALL TALK.
