Huang Xiao Ming (黄晓明)

Huang Xiaoming (simplified Chinese: 黄晓明; traditional Chinese: 黃曉明;
pinyin: Huáng Xiǎomíng, born 13 November 1977) is a Chinese actor, singer, and model. He is
one of the most famous and highest paid Chinese actor, checking in at 16th on the 2017 Forbes
China Celebrity List, 4th on the 2016 list, and 5th on the 2015 list.
Huang was born in Qingdao, Shandong as an only child. Part of the famed Beijing Film
Academy Class of 1996 (notable for producing three Chinese entertainment superstars: Huang
himself, Zhao Wei, and Chen Kun), Huang rose to fame in 2001, playing Emperor Wu of Han in
the television series The Prince of Han Dynasty. Later he starred in all three installments of the
series, becoming a sought-after lead actor. In 2006, he was selected to play Yang Guo, the
leading role in the 2006 highly-rated television series, The Return of the Condor Heroes, an
adaptation of the Jin Yong’s novel. In 2007, Huang received critical and popular acclaim for his
role as Wu Wenqiang in Shanghai Bund, a remake of the iconic 1980 television series The Bund,
which starred Chow Yun-Fat. For this role, he was nominated for the Best Actor Award at the
2007 Shanghai Television Festival, one of the largest and most prestigious film festival in East
Asia.

Now venturing into film, Huang continued to find success. In 2009, his role in the action
thriller The Banquet won him the Best Male Actor in a Motion Picture Award at the 2009
Golden Phoenix Awards. However, it was his 2010 role in the espionage thriller The Message
that cemented his status as a top film actor, earning him nominations for Best Actor at the 2010
Hundred Flowers Awards and Best Supporting Actor at the 2010 Golden Rooster Awards.
Since then, Huang has continued churning out highly-rated and successful roles. In 2012,
he became the first mainland Chinese actor to have a wax figure displayed at Madam Tussauds
museum. In 2013, his role in the film American Dreams in China swept the awards shows,
winning him Best Actor at the 2013 Golden Rooster Awards, the 2013 Huabiao Awards, the
2014 Hundred Flowers Awards, and the 2015 Golden Phoenix Awards. In 2015, he starred in the
television series Cruel Romance with Joe Chen, a commercial hit. In 2016, he starred as the
titular character in Xuanzang, which was chosen as China’s nominee for the Oscars under the
Best Foreign Language Film category. In 2017, he starred in the television series Nirvana Fire 2,
which was a critical and commercial success.

Outside of film, Huang Xiaoming married Angelababy in an extravagant ceremony in
October 2015. In January 2017, the couple welcomed their first son. Huang is BFF with fellow
Beijing Film Academy Class of 1996 Zhao Wei. In fact, Huang has openly admitted in different
interviews that he had a “big crush on her” when they were still in school together, and the two
Chinese superstars have stayed very close ever since their school days.
